15 ways Parents can Help Their Sparkies
My name is Karen Brayfield and I am the Children’s Ministry Director. This year we are beginning an Awana program on Wednesday nights for pre-K through 6th graders.
I have many years of experience with Awana - from being a clubber myself, to having my children be clubbers, and eventually participating at all levels. It is a great program and I am excited to be part of the beginning stages of Awana at Thanksgiving! Lutheran Church.
Awana is a Bible memorization program that incorporates fun and learning with life-long results. The handbooks are designed to be completed at home. There is both memorization and hands on work to be done. The Cubbies (preschool) and Sparks (K to 2nd) books provide great bed time or family time reading – and your role is vital!
Club night is divided into three sessions:
1) Game time - Awana games make up one third of the night, so make sure your clubber wears running shoes and comfortable clothing. Good sportsmanship is vital along with participation.
2) Handbook time - We limit clubbers to saying 4 sections per night and sections are to be said to their leader during handbook time on Wednesday night. If your clubber goes two weeks without saying any sections they will work on a section during game time.
3) Council (lesson) time - Our Bible lessons will revolve around our main theme: Map Quest – Finding Our Way Through God’s Word. Our main memory Scripture will be Proverbs 3:6, “In all your ways acknowledge Him and He shall direct your path.”
After these three sessions all clubbers gather again at the Awana Game Circle for the weekly Award Ceremony. You are welcome to join us to see your child receive their awards each week.
Clubbers need to wear their uniforms each night and must have them on to participate in holding the flag during the Flag Ceremony and to receive their awards.
Points are given for attendance, bringing a Bible, bringing dues ($.75 a week), bringing a friend, having their handbook , wearing their uniform, saying sections, saying sections word perfect, and participating in the theme for the night. Points are turned into Awana Shares which can be spent at the Awana store. There will be two Awana stores during the year.
Thank you for entrusting us with your child this year. We look forward to a rewarding year for clubbers and leaders alike!
