The Apostle’s Creed: Its Meaning and Significance for Today- As a boy I (Pastor Bruce) was required to memorize the Apostle’s Creed and Martin Luther’s explanations for each of the 3 articles pertaining to the Father, Son and Holy Spirit. The process began in Sunday school and was finalized during my time of confirmation instruction in the junior high years. Looking back, I recognize that though I claimed to believe the great foundational truths represented in the Apostle’s Creed, the reality was that I barely understood them. I “believed” but my understanding was shallow and my faith was immature. I did not really “own” these expressions of faith, nor did they hold much influence in my day-to-day walk with God.
Many years, much study and the joys and trials of life have expanded my understanding of these great summaries of the faith. By God’s grace, these same life experiences have worked these truths deep into my life so that the Apostle’s Creed is now my statement of belief, a true expression of my heart. It is not that I have arrived, for there is still much to learn, but when I stand and confess my faith in the form of the Apostle’s Creed I find my heart agreeing with each phrase as if I had written it myself.
