Hope X 500
Inspired by a mission trip to Honduras, three girl scouts from Bellevue, Nebraska created Project Hope X 500 for their Girl Scout Gold Award Project to fulfill a need with a community and create change. Many children in Honduras are unable to go to school because they do not have clothes to wear. The Hope X 500 goal was to make at least 500 dresses for girls in villages throughout Honduras to enable them to go to school so they can receive an education, providing a key tool for reducing poverty throughout their country. Another objective is that Hope X 500 continues after the initial goal is met to create long-term change.
For T!LC Serve Day in November 2009 over 30 folks cut out dresses, sewed and ironed to make 105 dresses. And with help from people throughout Nebraska and the US, the project made over 1,000 dresses!! On February 6th & 7th, 2010 the dresses were blessed before being shipped to Honduras. The girls also decided to send 200 dresses to Haiti to aid in earthquake relief. Nancy Blackwell (402-707-3514, email nkblackw@msn.com) is the Hope X 500 Serve Day point person.
